Archbishop Louis Mathias
Archbishop Louis Mathias
He was born in Paris on July 20th, 1887, lost he parents by
December 1899.He made his novitiate and first profession at san Gregorio Sicily .
Ordained a priest on July 20th
1913.he was rector at Pedara and was chosen as the head of the first missionary
expedition to Assam
in September 1921.
He reached Shilong on January
13, 1922.on 12th December he was nominated as prefect Apostolic of Assam , Bhutan
& Manipur.
He was the first Salesian
Provincial of India.
He established the network of
schools, agriculture and technical institutions and the printing press.
When Shillong was erected as
a new diocese, Mgr. Mathias was made as the first Bishop in November 10, 1934.
Fr. Mauro Casarotti
Fr. Mauro, the son of Charles
& Mary was born at Casalbuttano in the Cremona District, on May17, 1917. He
arrived in India
on December 5, 1939 and began his novitiate at Tirupattur. After spending his
three years in the internment camp
Dehradun , he made his
perpetual profession at Kotagiri in 1945 and was ordained a priest on August 7,
1949.Immedietly after his ordination he was sent as a catechist and prefect of
studies to Matunga. In 1952 he was made the Rector of the institute and remained
in the office till 1958.During these years he purchased land in Lonavala, much
against ideas of the other confreres who consider Lonavala too remote. He was
appointed as the provincial of Calcutta
in 1964 and then of Guwahati in 1966. He joined Bombay province in 1973 and he was sent to
Panjim. In 1975 he was appointed as the provincial of Bombay but because of his in health he had to
resign. He was appointed as the rector of the study house at Poona 1978.
Then he was posted in
Lonavala for three years till in 1984 he was appointed as the confessor at Nashik.
Fr. Mauro is known for his warm and humane approach to people. He died in the
year 2007.
